STAND OFF AND JAIL RIOT MAKES MISSISSIPPI NEWS IN LAST DAYS OF JULY 2012
Mississippi: Jones County deputies responding to a domestic dispute found 62-year-old Neil Newcomb barricaded inside the home with several hostages. Two people are dead and three others including a sheriff’s deputy are hospitalized after being shot in hostage standoff that lasted more than 12 hours.
The incident began Sunday afternoon at a home on Upper Hamilton Hill Road in the Shady Grove community. Newcomb’s daughter was killed during the standoff and his ex-wife and son-in-law were shot. Deputies were able to negotiate the release of the man’s two grandchildren.
The sheriff’s deputy was shot just after midnight during the first attempt by law enforcement to enter the house. He was taken to University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham. A swat team from the Mississippi Highway patrol made a second attempt to enter the home at around 5:00 a.m. and found Newcomb dead from a gun shot wound. It’s not known if he was shot by law enforcement or the gunshot was self inflicted.
HINDS COUNTY JAIL: According to Sheriff Tyrone Lewis, between the hours of 2:30 and 3:00 this morning during a routine security check, officials found one individual to be uncooperative. The inmate was put in isolation. He somehow got out of isolation and disrupted the rest of the inmates in that particular pod. The inmates then flooded the pod they were being held in.
Authorities were able to get their detention officers out of that pod as a precautionary measure. SWAT teams and paramedics were called in. There are about 160-180 inmates inside the pod, which is called Pod C, at the Dentention Center. No injuries have been reported. One detention officer was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. She’s stable and in good condition.
The inmate is 25-year-old Kendall Johnson, a black male. He was in for possession of marijuana and has a lengthy record. Right now Hinds County is negotiating with Johnson. He’s acting as the “spokesperson” for the inmates in pod C and has everyone in an uproar. Authorities have turned off the water and the air condition to that particular pod and have it under containment.
